The hardcover book, illustrated with bright animated pictures, is written as a story about two dogs – a guide dog and an assistant dog. The book is written in the form of a fun story, but the attractive format also aims to achieve educational goals – the story reveals what the rights of assistance dogs are, how to behave so as not to interfere with assistance dogs doing their job, and other important things.
Every page of the book is an illustration. Both text and illustration are given equal importance. The book is classified as intended for primary school children (children aged 5-10), but when creating it we focused on a wider audience: children, families reading with children, and adults interested in assistance dogs.
We published the book with accessibility in mind for readers with disabilities. The text is written in accessible language. For example, sentences are as short as possible and simple words are used. Such adaptations are relevant, for example, for readers with dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, or intellectual disability.
When publishing the book, a non-glossy, but sufficiently thick and moderately slippery paper was chosen, which would allow reading without reflections and easy turning of pages. The illustrations are in bright colors. The text uses an enlarged and bold font, wider spaces are left between lines, and the contrast with the background is increased. This may be suitable for readers with vision disability and dyslexia.
